In order for you to gain the most value from your qualification and to prepare you for your assessment and the industry, make sure you complete all of the SDL tasks.

Topic 1

Electrical Drawings

Answer the following questions to check your understanding of block diagrams, circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams and ladder diagrams and their relevance to you as an electrical worker. Don’t copy answers from the notes – try to use your own words.

  1. How does a circuit diagram differ from a wiring diagram?
  2. How does a black diagram help in troubleshooting an electrical system?
  3. How can an electrician use a block diagram and a circuit diagram together on a job?
  4. How does a wiring diagram help in the installation of an electrical system?
  5. How does a wiring diagram differ from a ladder diagram?

Topic 2

Surge Protection Devices

Create a short video entitled "Isolators in My Home”.

Identify five isolators in your home or workplace.

For each isolator, take a video and explain the purpose and importance of the isolator in your own words. (You can be creative with your explanations and use props or visual aids to help illustrate your points if you wish to.)

Share your video on the class forum, or on your phone during class time. As a class, discuss the different isolators found in your homes, the importance of isolators in protecting electrical installations, and any safety considerations related to isolator use.

Replacing Rewireable Fuses

Create a short video in which you explain the steps you would take to replace a fuse carrier with a plug-in circuit breaker. Post your video on the class forum. You may borrow props from your tutor however you MUST NOT do an actual demonstration on a live switchboard.

Types of Switches I

Briefly describe the operation of each mechanical switch listed in the table in this worksheet. Find an image and an application of each.

Topic 3

Cable Selection II

As an electrical apprentice, you have been assigned to look after the electric cable drums at your job site. The cost for each 100m 6.0mm 2core+earth flat TPS drum is $720 so it is important they are properly looked after. Write a checklist of the steps you would take to ensure the drums remain in pristine condition.

You may wish to consider the following factors:

  • Storage conditions.
  • Moisture.
  • Environmental Hazards.
  • Mechanical Hazards.
  • Inspection and Maintenance Procedure.
  • Labelling and Documentation.
  • Electrical Hazards.

Electrical Appliances

You are an electrical apprentice who has just completed a wiring job for a new home. Your boss asks you to provide a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and an Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC) for the work done. Write a brief explanation of what each certificate is, what they cover, and how they are different from each other on the worksheet that you downloaded earlier in this lesson.

Topic 4

Basic Lighting Systems

Choose a space (e.g., office, factory, living room, kitchen, bedroom) where lighting plays an important role in creating a comfortable and functional environment.

Search for a photo of the space you have chosen that showcases the use of ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.

Answer the following questions:

  1. What is the purpose of the space and how does lighting contribute to that purpose?
  2. What type of ambient lighting is used in the space and how does it create a certain mood or atmosphere?
  3. What type of task lighting is used in the space and how does it enhance functionality?
  4. What type of accent lighting is used in the space and how does it highlight specific features or objects?
  5. Are there any other types of lighting used in the space, such as decorative lighting or natural lighting?
  6. Create a presentation or report that includes the photo you found and your answers to the questions above. Use the photo to illustrate your points and make sure to cite your sources.
  7. Share your presentation or report on the class forum and discuss your findings. What similarities and differences did you notice between the different spaces? What new insights did you gain about the importance of lighting in creating functional and comfortable environments?

The following is a list of words taken from this resource. To help improve your understanding, research their meanings, or find the definitions in the workbook.  There is space to write the definitions. You could also look up how to say the word – most online dictionaries will demonstrate this.
