Visitor services are the services which the visitor needs to complete their experience. Within this topic we will go into detail of all things related to visitor services.

Visitor Services

Visitor services consist of everything else a tourist may need on their holiday, that is everything except for the sectors you previously learnt about; transportation, accommodation, sales and attractions/activities.  In other words, the services which the visitor needs to complete their experience such as; restaurants, bars, retail shops, banks and foreign exchange.

Souvenir Shop Assistant

Estimated starting annual salary: $37,500 - $40,000

Souvenir shops are often located at large attractions and activities and can generate over 50% of the income for some attractions, so they are very important! Souvenir shops are also located in the shopping areas of tourist cities, towns and airports.

A souvenir shop assistant would need to have a good knowledge of New Zealand and would be selling items representing the culture of New Zealand.

Travel Doctor

In many cities and towns you will find doctor surgeries or medical practices that specialise in travel medicine.

Their tasks and duties include:

  • Advising of any health precautions for people travelling to an overseas country
  • Assisting travellers when they feel unwell
  • Delivering vaccinations required for travelling to many remote countries.

Foreign Exchange Bureau Assistant

Below is a transcript from a graduate writing about her job selling Foreign Exchange:

Hi, my name is Jane and I work for Thomas Cook Foreign exchange in Wellington city.  We are a small office located in a large travel agency and there are two of us who handle foreign exchange.

My tasks and duties involve:

  • Updating the ‘Customer Rates Board’ which has the currency exchange rates and allows our customers to see our rates before they call in to change money.
  • Buying and selling foreign cash and travellers cheques
  • Issuing bank drafts and telegraphic transfers
  • Advising clients on the best currencies to take on a particular holiday
  • Advising on the best time to buy currency.
