What are gateway cities and countries?

Gateway cities are used as a major hub for air transportation in and out of a country. E.g. Auckland is the main gateway for New Zealand as most of the country’s international air transportation goes in and out of here.

Case Study

Ben is planning a trip around the Asia Pacific region. He is interested in culture, sport, lifestyle and history. Ben is looking at spending approximately 5- 7 days in each country.

Departing from Sydney, Australia, Ben's first destination will be Malaysia. Landing in Kuala Lumpur, he travelled by taxi to his hotel before starting his adventure. While in Kuala Lumpur, Ben visited the Petronas Twin Towers, before climbing the stairs at the Batu Caves. Exploring the city’s quirks, he travelled through the streets and spent a day in the Botanical gardens.

Next stop: Thailand. Arriving in Bangkok, Ben was hit with the humidity. It was here he indulged in street food and learnt the art of Muay Thai.

The time in Thailand came and went and before he knew it, Ben arrived at Beijing airport in China. It was in China he made lifelong friends. He joined a tour that explored the Great Wall, enjoyed banquets of traditional food and learnt the history behind the Terracotta Warriors.

Arriving in Tokyo, Japan, Ben was overwhelmed with the kindness of the Japanese locals. He took a ride on the famous bullet train from which he viewed the breathtaking Mt Fuji. Tokyo Disney was another highlight, along with indulging in ramen and sushi every day.

After an action packed adventure, Ben  took some much needed down time in New Caledonia. The capital, Noumea, was not at all what he expected! He chartered a small boat to take him to one of many local islands for some jet skiing. Later on as he relaxed and listened to the gentle waves crashing against the shore, he reflected on his adventure and started to plan the next one.
