Small businesses are defined when they employ less than 20 staff members, they are normally in sectors like retail, hospitality, manufacturing, or professional services. Small business owners oversee all business operations, including accounting, marketing, sales, HR, etc. In Australia, there were around 2.3 million small businesses employing close to 5 million people, accounting for 97% of all Australian businesses in the year 2019.
During the 2014-2015 financial year, 30% of small business owners had less than or equal to $25,000 pa income, 27.5% of small business owners had between $25,000 pa and $50,000 pa income, 25.5% of small business owners had between $50,000 pa and $100,000 pa income, 13.4% of small business owners had between $100,000 pa and $250,000 pa income, 2.6% of small business owners had between $250,000 pa and $1,000,000 pa income and 0.2% of small business owners had more than $1,000,000 pa income.
According to the National Careers Institute, 58.6% of the Certificate IV in Entrepreneurship and New Business graduates started or expanded a business, had a more highly skilled job, a promotion, higher pay, or a new job.
