Welcome to the module dedicated to First Aid.

Sub Topics

As part of the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care course requirements, you must complete the following approved First Aid training:  HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting (often called as Child Care First Aid).

There are many First Aid trainings available for different purposes and audiences. The HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is specifically designed for a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.

The training will equip you with the following skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies:

  • Respond to an emergency situation
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the guidelines established by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC)
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedure in accordance with established first aid principles
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Review the incident to:
    • Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required.
    • Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required.
Note

SOE does not offer this unit of competency. You will be required to undertake the unit of competency with an external provider at your own cost.

You are required to search for training providers near you to complete the training. To do this, enter "HLTAID012 near me" on Google and hit search. This will bring up a list of providers that you will need to contact, then enroll in the training. Most training providers offer the training as a 1 or 2 day training, in blended-mode where you complete the theory online, then you attend a face-to-face workshop to practise the required skills and complete the practical assessment.

The cost of the training varies - usually it costs between $99 - $200, depending on the location and the training provider.

Remember, the HLTAID012 First Aid certificate is valid for 36 months (3 years) from the date of course completion. The CPR component must be updated every 12 months.

In order to successfully complete the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care course, your First Aid certificate, including the CPR component, must be valid at the time of course completion.

Once you have completed the HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting training, submit the JP-certified copy of your certificate under Assessment 1, following the instructions.
