Units of Competency

This module consists of CHCCCS040 - Support independence and wellbeing.

In this module you will undertake a very practical learning experience to give you the skills on how to practice personal care effectively. This module requires that you safely support three (3) individuals to enhance their independence and wellbeing.

In the past, most ageing and disability services were run by large institutions, using a model that was similar to a hospital. The people supported in these services were expected to conform to rules and routines and were often told what to do and when to do it. There was very little room for individual differences. In the past few decades, there has been a huge shift in the way we approach ageing and disability services. Large institutions that once housed people with intellectual disabilities have been dismantled, and aged care facilities are no longer expected, or permitted, to be run like a hospital. Part of the reason for these changes is to help recognise that all people have the right to live a life of their own choice. People who are older and people with disabilities must be included in these rights.

By the end of this chapter you will understand:

  • Basic human needs and how they differ between people
  • The physical, intellectual, social, sexual and cultural development of humans
  • The differing needs of humans across the lifespan.
