Networking in person allows people to build a network of connected individuals that will enable them to succeed in a specific field. Networking within the office takes the same principle. It applies it digitally, so information and communication are easily connected and shared between people within the company and beyond through email and Internet access.
What networking is today
Networking describes the technologies, hardware, and software that underpin the ability of a business to share information. You may find that you remember some of the information in this module from previous lessons. You may have covered some of these concepts if you have already learned how to install an operating system and set it up for personal or business computing.
Similarly, networking involves computers, wireless technology (wifi), cables (e.g., ethernet), network appliances such as switches and routers, and a common language to communicate—global protocols. IT professionals also need to understand the security concerns and protocols that protect the network, the data it stores and serves, and all services it provides.
In today's Internet-driven world, companies simply cannot compete without a protected, efficient network designed to serve the specific tasks and needs of the business.
