Health and Safety Policies in Practice

Each centre- or home-based service will have health and safety policies and procedures that must be followed to meet the health and safety requirements. By now you should be well aware of these health and safety rules and guidelines, so consider this topic a refresher.

Activity - Policies and procedures from your own workplace

  1. Collect copies of your health and safety policies and procedures from your work placement.
  2. Note any policies that keep tamariki safe from:
    • each other
    • ill-treatment from a staff member
    • equipment or facilities
  3. Choose one of those three and create a poster that can be used in an ECE service centre. Consider the audience for the poster. If it's aimed at children, it shouldn't have text. If it's aimed at staff or whānau, you'll need to pitch the tone accordingly.
  4. Upload your poster and a description of the policy or procedure you are showing in a journal post, then publish it for your peers to see. Look at the submissions of others for inspiration and information.
  5. For additional detailed information, study the Health & Safety Guidelines for Early Childhood Centres published by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.
