Congratulations on starting Electrical Pre-Trade Level 3 at NZMA. We hope you have a wonderful time studying with NZMA.
Get ready to discover the exciting world of electricity in this 35-week programme. We will provide you with practical skills, in-depth knowledge and hands on training that will set you up for a career in electrical trades. The online part of this course will provide you with background knowledge to compliment your on-campus practical learning.
Be prepared to bring an appetite to learn, a hands-on attitude and a love of Hi-Vis. You will learn from your expert teacher, spending most of your time on the NZMA campus - but rest assured you will also meet with industry professionals and learn from the best in the business.
To support your classroom learning you will be required to complete the work on this online learning platform. It won’t be boring homework but will help you expand your know-how and awareness of the electrical industry.

*All assessments will be handed out and completed in person on campus.
Learning hours are blended. This means that you will complete some of them on campus and some of them in your own time. You are encouraged to interact with other students/ākonga through forums and group messaging in the online learning part of the course. Keep in mind that not everyone likes to study when you do, so you may need to wait for a response.
Total learning hours per week are approximately 35 hours. This is made up of 12 hours per week on campus with your tutor and classmates; 8 hours of online learning content; with an additional 15 hour per week of self-directed learning which is also carried out online.

Assessments/Aromatawai
A total of 120 credits are awarded for the programme.
There are 18 assessments to complete, 17 spread out across the 5 modules that make up this course, and a First Aid assessment which will be managed by an external provider. Assessments will be awarded an achieved or not-achieved result. All learning outcomes must be met to obtain an achieved result. All assessments must be completed in full, with all answers correct, for an achieved result.
In your final week you will complete the Capstone Assessment: this is an external assessment managed by the Electrical Workers Registration Board. Your tutor will provide you with more information about this.
Assessments are recorded as follows:
- Achieved – all work/unit has been achieved to the standards set in the assessment and performance criteria.
- Not Achieved – the student/ākonga has yet to complete the relevant work to be awarded the assessment or unit.
Assessment Submission
All assessments will be completed in person on campus as directed by your tutor.
Studying at Level 3
A certificate at level 3 qualifies individuals with knowledge and skills for a specific role(s) within fields/areas of work and/or preparation for further study.
A graduate of Level 3 is able to:
- demonstrate some operational and theoretical knowledge in a field of work or study
- select from and apply a range of known solutions to familiar problems
- apply a range of standard processes relevant to the field of work or study
- apply a range of communication skills relevant to the role in the field of work or study
- apply literacy and numeracy skills relevant to the role in the field of work or study
- work under limited supervision
- demonstrate major responsibility for own learning and performance
- adapt own behaviour when interacting with others
- contribute to group performance.
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Apply knowledge and principles of electrical theory and practice to basic electrical tasks.
- Apply safe working procedures and practices to electrical tasks, including first aid and CPR as needed.
- Operate within legal limitations of electrical and relevant non-electrical legislation.
- Select and use products, tools, and equipment suitable for use in the electrical industry.
- Install cables and electrical equipment.
- Use testing techniques to test for electrical safety, and to identify and diagnose electrical faults.
- Demonstrate behaviour suitable for the workplace, follow instructions, and complete basic workplace documentation.
Education pathways:
This qualification provides an entry pathway into the electrical industry. Graduates of this qualification may progress to the:
- New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Theory and Practice Trade) (Level 4) [Ref: 2388],
- New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Trade (Level 4) with strands in General Electrical, and Electricity Supply [Ref: 4204], and/or
- higher-level qualifications in other electrical fields.
