Within this topic, we are going to look at the nature of a New Zealand tourism business.
A product can be a tourism business involved in accommodation, transport, activities and attractions or ancillary services.
Below are listed some tourism products you would find in New Zealand. From the list, identify and match which sector of the tourism industry they are part of.
Let’s now look at what is involved when we talk about the nature of the tourism business.
The nature of a tourism business looks at –
- It’s place within the O/D model
- It’s physical location
- It’s staff roles
- The range of services and products it offers
As you know the O/D model is made up of ORIGIN, TRANSIT and DESTINATION. And you also know that PRODUCTS is one of the components which is analysed as part of this model.
The question is…how does a tourism business fit into the O/D model, whether that business is at the origin, transit or destination?
The products and services which a tourism business offer are very important in terms of the success of the business.
People need and want certain things when they’re travelling (and of course in everyday life). It’s these products and services which could possibly make or break a tourism product, or dictate how successful it may be.
The needs and wants of tourists will vary depending on their purpose of travel and who they’re travelling with. For example a businessman is going to need different things to what a family needs.
E.g. a businessman may need internet access in his room to be able to work, whereas a family may need to have a kids club or babysitting services available to them so the parents can have a holiday too. However, there will be certain things which both types of travellers need and want, such as a swimming pool or a restaurant onsite.
