A day in the life of ...

Damien works for Noah's Ark veterinary clinic as a trainee veterinary nurse. Damien's daily tasks are varied and involve working with a wide range of mainly domesticated animals.

Occasionally there is need to provide first aid treatment to animals who are brought into the clinic during an emergency situation, Damien's duties include assisting during these occurrences. The clinic has a comprehensive policies and procedures manual that Damien is familiar with and which he uses to guide him in his duties. When he is dealing with an injured animal he uses first aid casualty management principles to assess the situation, including identifying any immediate risks to himself, bystanders or the animal. If need be Damien will consult with his supervisor regarding the best cause of action and also request assistance if required. 

If it is safe to do so, Damien will approach the animal and apply animal handling techniques to move it into a safe area, ready for examination. During this process he will select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear or use, such as gloves or a mask. Using his knowledge of basic first aid techniques, Damien will assist a qualified veterinarian with the examination to determine the animal's physical condition and vital signs. Often the animal will require further treatment or surgery, Damien will help prepare for and assist during these procedures.

After the immediate first aid process has been completed, Damien will consult with various stakeholders regarding the ongoing care and treatment of the animal. This may include members of the public, specialists and/or wildlife support services. Future check-up appointments will be scheduled.
