There are many reasons for a person to travel to a destination.  The ‘reason’ or ‘purpose’ of travel means the same thing; they are the driving factors behind someone’s decision to make that trip.

Think about what the reasons are behind a person travelling to a destination.  What is the purpose for their travel?  Why would an international visitor travel to New Zealand?

The below table represents the order of the purposes of travel to New Zealand.

  • Almost 30% of international visitors travel to New Zealand for the purpose of visiting friends and/or relatives. VFR is the second largest purpose of visit for international visitors.
  • The main reason why international visitors come to New Zealand is for the purpose of a holiday.  Over half of all international visitors (52%) come to New Zealand for a holiday. This ties in with Australia being our largest generating market as its proximity to NZ makes us an easily viable holiday destination option.
  • Business travellers made up 8% of New Zealand’s total visitor arrivals, this is the 3rd biggest reason for international visitors to travel to New Zealand. However, 12% of travellers make up the ‘other’ unspecified category of purpose (which means they have a mixture of the above three reasons for travelling to NZ or other reasons not listed).
