There are many travel motivators. and everyone has their own various reason to travel. Here are a few more reasons why people might travel.

Sub Topics

This is when the travel is to a distressed destination or poor country to provide any assistance in a variety of ways. There are many organisations all over the world whose objective is to ease the suffering of people.

One of these organisations, Médicins San Frontièrs (doctors without borders), has been set up to aid people in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict.  Doctors, nurses and other medical workers will travel to help in countries that need assistance.  There are currently over 24,000 of these medical personnel helping all over the world.

Voluntary service overseas is an organisation which locates volunteers aged between 18 and 75 to a variety of worldwide destinations and their aim is to pass on their expertise to local people.  Volunteers are provided with accommodation and a local level allowance as well as airfares and insurance. The range of jobs is vast, and includes teachers, management consultants, health professionals, communications professionals, fundraisers and its’ specialists.

This is when the purpose of travel is for medical reasons or an operation.  For example, it is becoming very common for people to travel to other countries where dental work or cosmetic surgery is performed at a cheaper cost than their home country. These trips may have additional benefits as the early stages of recovery as they may take place in a country that have yet to discover.

This travel is for the purpose of business or trade. Some companies have many offices around the world so employees will often have to travel to other offices for meetings, training and other functions.

Companies may also have business dealings with corporations in other countries or other regions/towns in the same country.

Many airlines have concentrated on providing premium service on long haul flights especially for first and business class corporate travellers. Corporate/business travellers can find themselves travelling very frequently therefore airlines are very aware that these passengers may want to travel in more comfort than usual. Airport lounges were created to cater to this market.

This is when people travel to an event for a specific industry, in a specific trade or with a common interest to meet, discuss and learn about the latest trends in their area of expertise. A person travelling for a conference, convention or business exhibition is called a delegate.

You may have heard of Star Trek conventions; This is when fans of Star Trek all meet in one place to discuss their common interest!

Las Vegas in the USA is a very popular destination for conferences and conventions, and they can be of varying sizes.  Locations in New Zealand that are also popular for large companies to host their annual conference are Rotorua, Queenstown, Hanmer Springs and Auckland.

These places attract delegates from all regions, for conferences held in venues suited to that purpose, e.g. SkyCity Auckland has a large conference/exhibition room.

This is when the purpose for travel is to see and experience a specific show, sporting event, activity or festival.

Sporting events draw many tourists from other countries.  They travel because they usually want to see their favourite team or athlete competing in a competition.

Many New Zealanders travelled to Japan for the Rugby World cup in 2019 and many tourists will travel to New Zealand for the Americas Cup to be held here in 2021. they will probably also want to experience leisure activities and attractions as well. even New Zealanders that live overseas, will travel back for the event, but perhaps also visit friends and family.

Other types of sporting events that attract tourists include motor sport, the Olympic Games, Commonwealth games, golf, cricket, tennis tournaments and many more.

Sport is not the only type of event that encourages people to travel.  People will travel far and wide to see a favourite band, theatre show, horse race, street festival or expo that they may otherwise never get to see.

When the purpose of travel is directed towards exotic natural environments, intended to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife.

Without a doubt many visitors like to travel to places where they can see the environment in its natural state and observe that the environment is being protected. Eco tourism is non-damaging and non-degrading to the environment and is ecologically sustainable

Eco tourism is one of the reasons that tourists continue to flock to New Zealand and other countries of the world.
