The travel and tourism industry is one of the world’s largest industries, and one of the most exciting! 

It is larger than agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, finance, construction, or telecommunications.

It is also one of the world’s most glamorous industries - and one that has grown significantly over the last twenty years. 

There are many, many different careers that can open doors for you in the travel and tourism industry, whether it’s in an airport, for an airline, in a hotel, at an attraction or having fun working at an activity!   As we begin the journey, keep an open mind as to which area may hold the greatest possibilities for you.

  • Total tourism expenditure, (that’s both domestic and international visitor spend) was $39.1 billion, an increase of 7.7 % from the previous year.
  • International tourism expenditure increased by 9.6 % to $16.2 billion and contributed 20.6 % to New Zealand’s total exports of goods and services.
  • Domestic tourism expenditure increased 6.5 % to $23 billion.
  • 216,012 people were directly employed in tourism, that’s 8 % of the total number of people employed in New Zealand!
  • Overseas visitor arrivals to New Zealand increased by 3 percent.

The travel and tourism industry is extremely important to New Zealand – it is one of the main ways our country earns money.

People travel from all over the world to see our beautiful, clean country so we need to make sure that we give them a wonderful impression. 

If you are an employee in the travel and tourism industry, it is extremely important that you give fantastic customer service every time you deal with a tourist, so that they walk away having a great impression of New Zealand.

As you go through this course, you will be asked to think of what knowledge, personal presentation, attributes and skills that each job may need.  

In order to give amazing customer service all the time, a travel industry employee will require many things that come under four categories:

  • Knowledge: What you need to know in a job in order to complete the role, or what you may need to know before you get the job.
  • Attributes: Your characteristics and traits – they don’t change – they are what makes you, YOU!
  • Skills: The skills and qualities an employer would like or expect you to have.
  • Personal Presentation:  How you look/present yourself.
