Work Integrated Learning (WIL) has been regarded as one of the important aspects of studying at ICHM and in fact, one of the main reasons why students choose to study with us. Throughout the industry, our program and students are thought of in high regard and businesses use ICHM as the college of choice when it comes to the recruitment of interns and graduates. While there are no WIL subjects in the Diploma in Business program, WIL is a compulsory component of the Bachelor of Business.

WIL placements are structured workplace learning that prepares students for the workforce and assists in linking knowledge and skills that have been learnt on campus to those used in the relevant industries.

The main purpose of WIL is to provide students with the opportunity to practice and broaden the skills acquired at ICHM. It will enable you to gain knowledge of how the business environment operates and allows you to enter a network of industry contacts.

WIL placements provide you with a “foot in the door” to gain experience and see first-hand how a business organisation is run. This can be achieved in any position that you hold.

At ICHM we understand that your future goals may include becoming a Director, General Manager or Owner. However, to be able to hold any of these management titles, it is important that you know what happens at the operations level in a business organisation.

In addition to learning about the operations of a business, other aims of the WIL placement are to:

  • Put into practice the skills that you develop here at college
  • Reaffirm your career choice
  • Improve your communication skills at all levels
  • Network with other colleagues and managers
  • Learn how to work and cooperate as a team
  • Further your personal growth and responsibility
  • Start your career and prepare yourself for the future.

The Work Integrated Learning Placement program plays a large part in delivering these outcomes. Our aim is for you to move from being work-ready to being career-ready by engaging with initiatives offered by the Industry and Career Development Team (as illustrated by the following diagram).

The ICD team pride itself on trying to meet your needs as well as those of the employer. Whilst they do everything to assist you in securing the best WIL Placement, it is a collaboration between the ICD team and yourself, the student.

The ICD office is open Monday-Friday, from 8.30am to 4.30pm and are available to contact through the Support Page accessible through this platform (Please see earlier video under “Your enrolment and student services information” section, to remind yourself of how to access this page.

To give yourself the best chances of securing a placement, we ask that you remain as flexible and open-minded to all positions suggested to you throughout the trimester. It is the ICD team’s job to meet the needs of both our students and industry partners and to ensure you are meeting course requirements.

We look forward to assisting you through this exciting new phase in your education and wish you all the best in your studies.
